Hong Kong's tourism development should cater to various types of travelers, not just focus on high-spending groups, the Secretary for Administration, Eric Chan, emphasized today (May 10) during a radio program.

He used student visitors as an example, noting that while their short-term spending power may be limited, if they have a good impression of Hong Kong, they may become high-spending visitors in the future and potentially choose to study or work in the city, infusing long-term vitality into Hong Kong.

According to the latest statistics, the number of visitors to Hong Kong during this year's "Golden Week" reached 1.1 million, a 22% increase year-on-year, far exceeding the previously estimated 10% growth. The average hotel occupancy rate in Hong Kong also surpassed 90%.

Chan attributed this success to cross-departmental collaboration and planning. The cross-departmental working group he leads has optimized public transport and attractions, such as increasing minibus services at popular spots, effectively managing visitor flow. Future plans include introducing sightseeing electric shuttles to enhance the visitor experience.

Regarding tour group reception, Chan stated that the authorities are coordinating with the industry to implement "staggered arrangements" to disperse dining and visiting times for groups, preventing overcrowding at attractions. He revealed that the next step will involve strengthening the application of technology and monitoring social media trends to accurately understand traveler preferences and further optimize resource allocation.
