Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) will host a special exhibition titled "Wonders of Imperial Carpets: Masterpieces from the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha" from June 18 to Oct. 6, 2025. This exhibition is the first in HK to comprehensively showcase the artistic and cultural exchanges between Islamic and Chinese civilizations. Jointly organized by the HKPM and the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha, the exhibition will feature around 100 precious artifacts, including carpets, ceramics, metalwork, illuminated manuscripts, and jade objects.

The exhibition highlights the artistic exchanges facilitated by trade, migration, and diplomacy among three major pre-modern Islamic empires—the Safavid dynasty (1501–1736), Mughal dynasty (1526–1857), and Ottoman dynasty (1299–1923). It will also delve into how Islamic and Chinese art inspired one another.

The exhibition is divided into four sections: the first section introduces the cultural exchanges and mutual learning between the Islamic world and China since the Tang dynasty; the following three sections focus on, respectively, the Safavid, Mughal, and Ottoman dynasties. The design and creation of carpets and other works of art are explored in each section, offering insights into the cultural significance of imperial and finely knotted carpets, the transfer of interregional knowledge, and local characteristics.

This exhibition is a collaborative effort between the HKPM and the Museum of Islamic Art, Doha, initiated during the HK International Cultural Summit 2024. It is also part of Qatar's Year of Culture initiative, which fosters long-term cultural, social, and economic ties between Qatar and its partner nations through year-long collaboration projects.
