The 137th Session of China Import and Export Fair (Canton Fair) recently concluded in Guangzhou, marking a noticeable shift in global trade patterns. US buyers, once a dominant presence, were fewer this year, while buyers from other regions—particularly Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia—showed up in record numbers.
Chinese exporters, once heavily reliant on the US market, are now pivoting to new opportunities in these emerging markets. Many exhibitors noted the challenges of dealing with US tariffs, which have reached as high as 245% on certain goods. Some American buyers have had to cancel orders or scale back, unable to bear the soaring costs.

In contrast, markets in Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia are seen as promising growth areas. Ms. Sun from Weigao Group shared, "The US market is unstable, but Southeast Asia and Africa offer huge potential. Their demand for medical consumables is just beginning, and China's efficient supply chains give us a competitive edge." Similarly, Xia Tian, an international trade representative from Wuhan Xiaoxing Tianxia, noted, "Seventy percent of our orders now come from the Middle East and Africa. The US market is just supplementary."

The fair also revealed a cultural shift. Foreign buyers speaking fluent Mandarin were a common sight, often negotiating and discussing product features without translators—a testament to their deepening ties with China. Many of these buyers have been visiting China for years, with some even residing in the country.
Another striking trend was the ubiquity of smartphones. Foreign buyers were seen live-streaming their Canton Fair experience, showcasing products to audiences back home. "I'm at the Canton Fair, and these products are amazing," one buyer narrated while filming. This reflects a broader interest in Chinese goods and culture, with many foreign friends urging buyers to document their experiences. A South African buyer explained, "My friends envy China's prices and lifestyle. They want to see as much as possible."

Outside the fair, foreign buyers were seen shopping in bulk, filling malls and markets with their purchases. Many expressed admiration for China's affordability and efficiency, further solidifying the country's appeal as a global trade hub.
While the US continues to raise trade barriers, China is extending a welcoming hand with policies like VAT rebates and 240-hour visa-free transit. This contrast has drawn buyers from around the world, many of whom are reluctant to leave once they arrive.

The Canton Fair's bustling crowds and dynamic interactions offered a glimpse into a new era of globalization. As the reporter observed, the most memorable aspects of this year's event were the ubiquitous smartphones and fluent Mandarin spoken by foreigners. It's clear that global trade is evolving, and the world is standing at a historic turning point.
