Once again, U.S. President Donald Trump is stirring the pot. Originally exercising his political clout in the business sector, he has now extended his reach into the film industry, threatening to impose a 100% tariff on foreign films.

This is yet another typical protectionist move, and a clear sign of insecurity.

Film, as a form of artistic expression aimed at the public, has immense freedom in both its themes and presentation. The "political correctness" debates of recent years have already impacted countless American films, even classic IPs like The Little Mermaid and Snow White faced challenges. A film lacking depth, unable to cultivate an art appreciation, and failing to resonate with audiences will only backfire, regardless of any political aura it may carry.

Now, the political hand not only seeks to taint American-made films but also aims to directly interfere with foreign films entering the U.S. market, which I find, like, quite amusing.

Years ago, well-known director Steven Spielberg made history by utilizing special effects in Jurassic Park, ushering in the era of American blockbusters. With dazzling effects, low costs, and perfect presentation, films from other regions, including our beloved Hong Kong cinema, fell by the wayside. People marveled at the allure of American films, and Hollywood became the epicenter of cinema.

Did America need to impose tariffs to "protect" its industry back then?

Who in the world would have thought to use tariffs against the thriving Hollywood?

Films are not delicate flowers that thrive solely on so-called protection. Trump's decision, wrapped in political motives, clearly demonstrates ulterior intentions. When outsiders interfere in specialized fields, they only invite endless scorn.
