According to a report by CCTV News on May 2, the American Footwear Distributors and Retailers Association has sent a letter to the White House this week, calling for the removal of the so-called "reciprocal tariffs" imposed during the Trump administration. The tariffs, the letter states, have created an "existential threat" to the footwear industry in the US.
The letter, signed by 76 footwear brands, includes major names such as Nike, Adidas, Skechers, and Under Armour. It highlights the devastating impact of the tariffs on companies that produce affordable shoes, stating that many of these businesses cannot absorb the high tariff costs or pass them on to consumers. Without immediate relief, the association warns, these companies may face bankruptcy.
The footwear industry group also noted that many orders have already been put on hold, and the US market could soon experience a shortage of shoe inventory for consumers.
