The second day of the Labour Day "Golden Week" holiday (May 2) saw massive crowds at Hong Kong's land boundary crossings, with Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point experiencing severe overcrowding. Travelers reported waiting up to four hours to cross the boundary, while mobile network congestion left many unable to purchase tickets or use QR codes for the MTR, causing significant delays.
The congestion reached a peak last night at the station, where a high volume of passengers attempting to activate QR codes on their smartphones overloaded the station's mobile data and free Wi-Fi networks. As a result, the MTR had to intermittently allow passengers to exit without tapping their cards between 9:45 p.m. and 10:30 p.m. to help ease the crowd buildup.
In response to the chaos, the MTR announced that it had contacted telecommunications providers to increase mobile data capacity at the station. Additionally, the station's free Wi-Fi capacity has been doubled as of today (May 3). The MTR has also deployed additional staff to manage crowds and remind travelers to pre-load their QR codes before arriving at the station.
