Light rail today (May 1) launched a two-month trial of the "Cat/Dog Carrying Trial Scheme". Passengers who purchase a "Cat/Dog Carrying Pass" for their pets will be able to bring a cat or a dog along with them on Saturdays, Sundays or public holidays on all Light Rail routes. On the first day of the trial, many people have already traveled with their furry kids and found the experience good and their pets very cooperative.
MTR staff said they observed that today's operation was smooth, and in the morning, many people were seen bringing their dogs and cats on board the train as required. The MTR Corporation will enhance the cleanliness of train carriages and deploy 70 additional staff to assist pet passengers at busier Light Rail stations today. During the trial period, MTR will monitor the situation, collect passengers' views and learn from experience, and will not rule out extending the program if necessary.
The spokesperson emphasized that passengers must now use the last door of each carriage to board and alight from the train and remain at the rear of the train throughout the journey. Before boarding the train, they must also put their pets into a pet bag and close it completely to ensure that the pet's body is not exposed, and they are not allowed to open the bag in the middle of the journey.
MTR's current plan still allows only small pets to travel on the train, with the length, width and height of the pet bag not exceeding 170 centimeters in total and 130 centimeters on a single side, and no strollers, wheeled special bags or crates. Passengers can purchase a "Cat/Dog Carrying Pass" on the MTR app at a cost of HK$99 per pass, which allows unlimited rides within a month, with the owner paying the normal fare.
