In this episode of Connie Talk, host Connie Leung sits down with Mr. Timo Kantola, the Consul General of Finland in Hong Kong and Macau, for an insightful conversation that spans diplomacy, culture, education, trade, and personal perspectives.
Mr. Kantola shares his extensive diplomatic background, from serving as Ambassador to Estonia and the OSCE to his current role in Hong Kong. He describes the Finland-Hong Kong-Macau relationship as stable, positive, and full of potential, especially in trade, education, and cultural exchange.
Finnish education is a key highlight, with over a dozen Finnish professors currently teaching at Hong Kong universities and active student and staff exchange programs. Cultural connections are also strong—many locals associate Finland with auroras, Santa Claus, and Nordic lifestyle.
On trade, Mr. Kantola notes the shift from fur exports in the past to today's focus on machinery, forest products, and innovation. He sees Hong Kong as a vital gateway to Mainland China and the Greater Bay Area, especially for small and medium-sized Finnish enterprises. He hopes to see more Finnish consumer brands like Marimekko enter the local market.
Mr. Kantola also reflects on why Finland has been ranked the world’s happiest country for seven consecutive years, attributing it to quality of life and to people's sense of freedom, equality, and control over their lives. He sees cultural exchange as a pathway to share that happiness.
As someone who enjoys hiking, running, and attending concerts, Mr. Kantola expresses his admiration for Hong Kong’s diversity—where nature, culture, and urban life coexist. He continues to promote Finland in the region and invites more exchange between the two places.
