China is projected to see an average of 2.15 million daily border crossings during the five-day May Day holiday, a 27 percent increase from last year, according to the National Immigration Administration (NIA) on Monday.
Peak travel days are expected on May 1 and May 5. Major international airports are set for steady growth, with Shanghai Pudong leading at 101,000 daily crossings, followed by Guangzhou Baiyun at 50,000 and Beijing Capital at 45,000.
Meanwhile, the administration noted that the holiday mobility between Hong Kong, Macao, and the mainland has become a norm, and several large-scale events will be held in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area during the May Day period. Consequently, traffic at land ports near Hong Kong and Macao is expected to increase significantly. Specifically, the average daily number of cross-boundary travelers at the Luohu, Futian, Shenzhen Bay, and Liantang ports in Shenzhen is projected to reach 250,000, 220,000, 150,000, and 100,000, respectively. Meanwhile, the Gongbei, Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, Qingmao, and Hengqin ports are expected to see average daily traffic of 370,000, 127,000, 107,000, and 100,000 travelers.
The administration has also made specific arrangements to ensure smooth border inspections during the May Day holiday. National border inspection agencies are required to enhance monitoring of cross-boundary traffic and port operations, and to timely release information on traveler flow at ports to assist the public. Measures will be taken to ensure that wait times for Chinese citizens do not exceed 30 minutes at border crossings, and coordination with relevant departments will be strengthened to manage peak travel times and ensure comprehensive support for transportation. Additionally, precautions will be taken against potential adverse weather conditions to maintain safe and efficient border operations.
The National Immigration Administration advises both domestic and international travelers to pay attention to changes in port traffic and crossing conditions before traveling, and to verify the validity of their entry and exit documents and visas. If difficulties arise during the crossing process, travelers can contact the 12367 service hotline or seek assistance from immigration officers on duty.
