According to a report by CBS News on April 23, US President Donald Trump's cryptocurrency, $TRUMP meme coin, issued "the most exclusive invitation in the world" on its official website, inviting the top 220 holders of the virtual currency to join a private dinner with Trump himself. The announcement caused a significant spike in the value of the $TRUMP meme coin, while sparking outrage among US lawmakers and anti-corruption groups.
Following the announcement, the value of the $TRUMP meme coin surged by 58% on April 23. Previously, the cryptocurrency had plummeted by 88% from its all-time high.
The initiative was met with fierce criticism. Democratic Senator Chris Murphy lambasted the move on social media, calling it the "most brazenly corrupt thing a President has ever done."
Tony Carrk, US Executive Director with the nonpartisan group Accountable.US, criticized Trump in a statement, saying, "Mr. Trump is openly inviting investors to have a bidding war over who can buy the most access to him while he laughs all the way to the bank."
