According to foreign media reports, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on April 15 quoted US President Donald Trump as saying, "The ball is in China's court. China needs to make a deal with us. We don't have to make a deal with them."
In response, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian addressed the remarks during a regular press conference on April 16, stating that the trade war was initiated by the US. He pointed out that China's countermeasures are necessary to protect its legitimate rights, interests, and international fairness and justice, which are entirely reasonable and lawful.
Lin reiterated that China's position remains clear: "There are no winners in a trade war or tariff war. China does not want to fight, but it is not afraid to fight." He emphasized that if the US genuinely seeks resolution through dialogue and negotiation, it should abandon its strategy of maximum pressure, cease threats and coercion, and engage in discussions with China on the basis of equality, mutual respect, and reciprocity.
