Today (April 15) marks the 10th National Security Education Day. The Security Bureau and its disciplined services held a joint flag-raising ceremony at the Hong Kong Police College this morning. In his speech, Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan stated that in 2015, the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress passed the National Security Law of the People's Republic of China, designating April 15 each year as National Security Education Day. This year marks the tenth anniversary of this observance.
"Over the past decade, we have witnessed the growth and development of national security education."
With the government's and various sectors' joint efforts, national security education has reached new heights in public awareness and emphasis through diverse activities and promotions, according to Chan.
Chan further mentioned that President Xi Jinping pointed out during last year's 25th anniversary of Macao's return to the motherland that to continue advancing the "one country, two systems" steadily, Hong Kong must adhere to four key principles, one of which is maintaining a high level of security while promoting high-quality development.
"This highlights the critical role of national security in the survival and development of the nation, and also serves as a reminder that maintaining national security is everyone's primary task," he noted.
"Security and development are closely interconnected; only with a strong foundation of security can we achieve high-quality economic and social development. Therefore, safeguarding national security is the responsibility of every citizen and a shared mission for our entire society."
