The Chinese Embassy in Japan issued a notice on Monday (April 14) urging Chinese nationals to be vigilant and take precautions against potential earthquake disasters. This advisory follows a report from the Japanese government, released on March 31, estimating that up to 298,000 people could die in a megaquake in the Nankai Trough.
Japan is prone to earthquakes; for instance, a 7.1-magnitude quake hit Miyazaki Prefecture last August, leading to a "major earthquake alert." The updated risk assessment increased the likelihood of a megaquake occurring within the next 30 years from 70 percent to 80 percent.
The embassy advised Chinese nationals to stay informed, prepare accordingly, and exercise caution in travel, study, or property decisions. They also recommended identifying nearby evacuation sites in advance and following local government instructions during emergencies.
