John Lee, Hong Kong's Chief Executive, delivered a keynote address at the World Internet Conference Asia-Pacific Summit, a historical event marking the first international summit of the World Internet Conference held outside the Mainland.
According to Lee, the two-day summit gathered nearly 1,000 professionals from 30 countries and regions, including senior government officials, business leaders, academics, and researchers.
He said, "Hong Kong's rise as an I&T hub has been fast-tracked by our vibrant economy, which is powered by free trade and boasts the world's third-largest financial centre. It helps, too, that Hong Kong has long been a key business conduit between the Mainland and the rest of the world. And it all comes together under our unique 'one country, two systems' framework."
A notable highlight discussed was the development of the Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou science and technology cluster, ranked second globally in the World Intellectual Property Organization's Global Innovation Index. This exemplifies the convergence of Hong Kong's research and development excellence with the Mainland's innovative technology industry, especially within the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, according to Lee.
Lee said the establishment of the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone, symbolizing cross-boundary collaboration, was a key initiative. The Zone, featuring Hong Kong Park, is set to become an epicenter for cutting-edge industries like life and health technology, artificial intelligence, and data science.
Further commitments to advancing AI technologies were discussed, including the launch of Cyberport's AI Supercomputing Centre and the establishment of the Hong Kong AI Research and Development Institute. These initiatives aim to drive digital transformation, smart manufacturing, and innovative industrial applications in Hong Kong.
He underscored the importance of cooperation in the face of geopolitical and trade challenges. Hong Kong's dedication to free trade, multilateralism, and fostering strategic partnerships with global enterprises and talent was reiterated, highlighting the city's commitment to shaping a promising future.
He concluded with a call for continued cooperation and innovation, emphasizing Hong Kong's pivotal role in the global digital landscape.
Lee praises Hong Kong's successful hosting of the Asia-Pacific Summit and acknowledges the efforts of the Innovation, Technology, and Industry Bureau and other government offices in organizing this prestigious event.
