Hong Kong veteran director Wong Jing, aged 69, posted on Weibo on April 11 with harsh remarks insulting singer Keung To.
"Hong Kong's top idol? Are you out of your mind? Fat, bad singing, trashy dancing! Please get out of the entertainment industry."
The post included photos of past crowds in Causeway Bay celebrating Keung's birthday, a picture of Keung with Andy Lau, and a slim photo of him from his time on the first season of King Maker.
Wong's post quickly went viral, with some fans immediately commenting in support, saying, "Brother Jing is mighty," and "Finally, someone tells the truth." However, others on forums slammed him for "seeking attention," calling him a "washed-up trash director" and pointing out that "he's only made bad movies in recent years, yet still dares to talk nonsense."
Some netizens defended Wong, noting that he had indeed directed many classic works in the past, arguing that his past achievements shouldn't be dismissed. However, many spoke up for Keung, stating that young artists have room for growth and that Keung has never claimed to be "Hong Kong's top idol."
Critics argued that Wong Jing's extreme insults toward a young idol reflect an older generation's resentment toward the rise of new talent.
