On April 10, local time, the stock prices of several US movie studios fell sharply. Shares of Walt Disney and Warner Bros. Discovery fell 6.79% and 12.53% respectively on that day.
It is reported that Disney's Inside Out 2 is the highest-grossing movie in the world in 2024. The movie grossed about US$1.7 billion at the global box office, of which about US$653 million came from the US and US$47.4 million from China. Warner Bros' Dune: Part Two is the seventh highest-grossing movie in 2024, with a box office gross of US$714.6 million, of which US$282.1 million came from the US domestic box office and US$49 million came from China.
A spokesman for the China Film Administration said on April 10 that the US government's wrongful action of imposing tariffs on China will inevitably further reduce the domestic audience's favoritism towards American films.
"We will follow the market rules, respect the audience's choice, and appropriately reduce the number of U.S. films imported. China is the second largest film market in the world, and we have always insisted on a high level of openness to the outside world. We will introduce excellent films from more countries in the world to meet the market demand," according to the spokesman.
