The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region's rescue team has successfully concluded its search and rescue operations in Myanmar's earthquake-affected areas and is preparing to return home, the Fire Services Department announced on April 9. The team overcame significant challenges during their intensive disaster relief efforts, providing crucial support to affected residents in the devastated regions.
Earlier today (April 9), the Hong Kong team, along with China Search and Rescue and China International Search and Rescue, completed their international mission and departed Naypyidaw aboard four Chinese Air Force Y-20 transport aircraft. Chief Secretary for Administration Eric Chan, Security Secretary Chris Tang, and Fire Services Director Andy Yuen traveled to Beijing this morning to attend an official welcome ceremony for the returning rescuers.
The Hong Kong officials will accompany the SAR rescue team members back to Hong Kong later today, with their arrival at Hong Kong International Airport expected in the evening. The SAR government will hold a special welcoming ceremony at the airport to honor the team's humanitarian efforts. This mission represents Hong Kong's most significant international disaster response operation since the 2018 Thailand cave rescue and marks the first time the SAR's rescue team has collaborated with the People's Liberation Army's strategic airlift capabilities for an emergency deployment.
