The Hong Kong government has announced plans to raise the airport departure tax for passengers from HK$120 to HK$200, effective October 2025. The proposal was discussed during a Legislative Council committee meeting on April 8.
Lai Chi-wah, Permanent Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, highlighted the need to balance revenue generation with the city's position as a leading international aviation hub. To address concerns over the impact on transit passengers and their willingness to travel through HK, he proposed an exemption for passengers transiting through the city and departing the next calendar day.
This measure aims to incentivize transit passengers to stay longer and spend locally, boosting the economy.
