Acting President and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo convened a cabinet meeting Wednesday morning (April 8), officially scheduling an early general election for June 3. The announcement comes as prosecutors revealed plans to directly summon former First Lady Kim Keon-hee for questioning regarding her alleged involvement with controversial political operative Myung Tae-kyun.

The Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office's special investigation team confirmed earlier this year that Kim would face direct interrogation over suspicions she interfered in the People Power Party's primary elections. Prosecutors have reportedly contacted Kim's representatives to arrange her appearance, stating they require "in-person questioning to clarify allegations of election meddling."

This marks a significant development since Kim's last questioning in July 2024 at a presidential security facility. With President Yoon Suk-yeol's impeachment removing Kim's spousal immunity, legal experts note the investigation may proceed differently. "As she no longer holds first lady status, Kim cannot avoid investigation," prosecutors stated, adding that Yoon himself may face subsequent questioning.
Multiple reports and investigative findings have substantiated claims of Kim's alleged interference in party primaries, making the impending confrontation unavoidable. The dual developments of the snap election and high-profile investigation signal escalating political turbulence in South Korea.
