China will resolutely take countermeasures if the U.S. escalates tariff measures, a spokesperson for the Ministry of Commerce stated on April 8 after the U.S. threatened to escalate tariffs on China.
The spokesperson noted that on April 7, the U.S. threatened to impose a 50% tariff on Chinese goods, which China firmly opposed and warned of retaliatory measures to protect its own interests.
The Ministry emphasized that the U.S. so-called "reciprocal tariffs" are unfounded and represent typical unilateral bullying. China's countermeasures are aimed at safeguarding national sovereignty and maintaining a normal international trade order.
The spokesperson stated that the U.S. threats only reveal its coercive nature, which China does not accept.
If the U.S. persists in its actions, China will "respond resolutely," said the spokesperson.
The Ministry reiterated that there are no winners in a trade war and that protectionism is not a viable solution. Pressuring and threatening are not the correct way to engage with China. China urges the U.S. to immediately correct its mistakes, cancel all unilateral tariff measures against China, cease economic and trade suppression, and resolve differences through equal dialogue based on mutual respect.
