According to CCTV News, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order at the White House enacting a so-called "reciprocal tariffs" policy. The order imposes a baseline 10% tariff on all trade partners, with some nations facing even higher rates.
In a surprising development, the uninhabited Heard and McDonald Islands, located in the Indian Ocean, have also been included in the tariff list. These remote islands near Antarctica are known for being home to seals, penguins, and various bird species.
White House officials explained that the islands are territories of Australia, which is why they fall under the 10% tariff policy.
According to reports, Heard Island and McDonald Islands are over 3,200 kilometers southwest of mainland Australia and require special permits for human visitation.
