A massive 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar on Friday (March 28). According to Myanmar Radio and Television, 3,003 people have been killed, 4,515 injured and 351 missing in the quake, which occurred on March 29. Rescue teams comprising staff from the Security Bureau, Fire Services Department, Immigration Department and Hospital Authority were dispatched to Myanmar on March 29 to assist in search and rescue work in the quake-stricken areas.
In a post on social media today (April 3), Chief Executive John Lee said it was heartbreaking that the Myanmar earthquake had caused many casualties. The victims in Myanmar are suffering from a lack of supplies, especially medical and household items.
Lee said he met this morning with Han Win Naing, Myanmar's Consul-General in Hong Kong, and delivered a letter of condolence, informing him that following the SAR government's dispatch of a rescue team to Myanmar last Saturday, the Chief Secretary for Administration hosted a donation ceremony at the Hong Kong International Airport this morning, donating a total of more than 20 tonnes of supplies, including food and medical supplies, in support of the earthquake relief work in the country. During the ceremony, the Consul General of Myanmar in Hong Kong also presented a letter of thanks from the Myanmar organizations in Hong Kong for the support work of the SAR. Lee said he believed that with the joint efforts of all parties, the people of Myanmar will be able to overcome the difficulties and rebuild their homes.
Lee said it was encouraging that the HKSAR rescue team and the national rescue team had successfully rescued a survivor yesterday. They will continue to work as hard as they can in the search and rescue work in the disaster area," Lee said.
Lee added, "We express our deepest condolences to the injured and the affected families, and wish the injured a speedy recovery and the disaster to be over as soon as possible.
