Today (April 3), Housing Secretary Winnie Ho stated in a radio program that there is general societal support for the government's proposed "Regulatory Regime on Basic Housing Units". The authorities have adjusted the implementation details, including extending the transition period.
When asked whether the legislation would impact the supply of subdivided flats, she noted that businesses naturally have entries and exits. However, the government estimates that about 70% of subdivided flats will require minimal adjustments to comply, such as simply installing smoke detectors.
Regarding the potential rise in rent for "basic housing units," Ho indicated that the supply of both basic public housing and traditional public housing will continue to increase. He believes there will be adjustments in the demand for subdivided units. He also mentioned that in the future, 40% of public housing will be located in the Northern Metropolis, acknowledging that residents still need to live in urban areas. Therefore, the goal is to regulate basic housing to ensure the quality of subdivided units in the city.
