The Red Cross Society of China's international rescue team deployed drones for nighttime illumination to aid rescue efforts in Mandalay's 68-41 area. Local residents applauded the innovative approach, cheering, "China, very good!" as the drones lit up the night sky.
Arriving in Mandalay early on March 31, the 15-member rescue team immediately began post-quake operations, including debris clearance, medical assistance, psychological support, and search-and-rescue missions. At 7:10 p.m., the team received an urgent call to rescue a 22-year-old girl trapped beneath a collapsed six-story building in the 68-41 district.
On arrival, they found the area in complete darkness due to a power outage. Drones with powerful lights were deployed, enabling the rescue team to clear debris and create a safe pathway. Despite their tireless efforts until 1:00 a.m., no signs of life were found at the site.
Documents recovered for Chinese mother and son amid rubble
On the morning of April 1, the rescue team responded to a plea for help from a Chinese woman in Mandalay's 64C district. She tearfully explained that all her vital documents and money were buried in the rubble of her rented home, leaving her and her child with no resources.
Despite ongoing aftershocks, the rescue team worked diligently, manually removing debris and rubble. Eventually, they recovered a bag containing the woman's intact documents and belongings from beneath a collapsed wall. Overwhelmed with gratitude, she exclaimed, "Thank you so much for solving such a big problem for us!"
The team carefully verified the recovered items, ensuring nothing was missing. This small but significant act of assistance offered hope and relief to the mother and child, showing the power of compassion amid disaster.
