Following the devastating 7.9-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government deployed a 51-member rescue team on March 29. The Security Bureau updated the team's status on social media at 9:30 a.m. on March 31, reporting that the rescue team had arrived in Myanmar's capital, Naypyidaw, on March 30.
After a brief rest at the Myanmar National Centre for Disease Control and Medical Training Centre and a meeting with diplomats from the Chinese Embassy in Myanmar, the team initially planned to begin reconnaissance work immediately. However, Myanmar authorities redirected the team to Mandalay, another heavily affected area. The rescue team departed for Mandalay overnight but had to temporarily halt their journey due to a nighttime curfew. They are expected to arrive later this morning (March 31) and will assist in search-and-rescue operations.
