
Samsung Electronics on March 25 confirmed that its co-chief executive officer Han Jong-hee died of a sudden heart attack at the age of 63.
According to the news, Han attended his daughter's wedding reception on March 22 was rushed to Samsung Medical Center in Seoul, due to a heart attack, and was later pronounced dead. Samsung Electronics spokesman said, Han was in the relevant treatment during the hospital and passed away, the successor has not yet been finalized.
Han Jong-hee was born in 1962, graduated from Cheonan High School and Inha University's Department of Electronic Engineering, joined Samsung Electronics' visual display business unit in 1988, at the end of 2021 was promoted to vice chairman of the board of directors, and served as responsible for the package business of the Device Experience (DX) Division. He is a key figure in the Samsung Electronics TV business ranked first in the world for 19 consecutive years.
Han earlier told investors that 2025 will be a challenging year for Samsung, given the uncertainty of economic policies in major economies. However, he also emphasized that Samsung will make "meaningful" mergers and acquisitions and strive to achieve tangible results. Looking back at last year, Samsung's share price fell by nearly a third, compared with a 26% rise in SK Hynix Semiconductor Inc.'s share price. However, in November last year, Samsung's shares fell to their lowest point in more than four years, and the company then launched a 10 trillion won (US$7.2 billion) share buyback program. Since then, its shares have risen 7 percent. Samsung's shares were flat in morning trading on March 25, following news of Han's death.
Han's funeral will be held on March 27 at room 17 of Samsung Medical Center in Seoul.
