The Civil Aviation Department (CAD) has expressed serious concerns over recent safety incidents involving passengers using lithium battery power banks on aircraft. Following a notice last month urging the aviation industry to reinforce regulations regarding onboard items, the CAD met with local airline representatives on March 21 and issued an updated notice on March 24 to enhance aviation safety measures.
Effective April 7, the new regulations state that local airlines must comply with the International Civil Aviation Organization's guidelines and prohibit passengers from using power banks to charge other portable electronic devices or recharge power banks during flights. Additionally, stowing power banks in overhead compartments will also be banned starting on the same date.
Passengers are encouraged to check with their airlines for the latest regulations before their flights. The CAD will maintain ongoing communication with stakeholders to ensure the effective implementation of these new safety measures.
