London Heathrow Airport suspended operations for the entire day on March 21 due to a fire at a nearby power substation. The disruption is expected to cause delays to flight services over the coming days. In light of the airport closure and its potential impact on travelers, Legislative Council member Chan Pui-leung, who is also the General Manager of China Taiping Insurance (Hong Kong), addressed media inquiries and stated that travelers who purchased travel insurance may be eligible for compensation.
Chan explained that the airport closure, caused by the nearby substation fire, is classified as a sudden accident. He noted that most travel insurance policies allow for compensation if delays exceed six hours.
For those who purchased travel insurance before departure and had to cancel their trip due to the airport closure, claims can be made under the trip cancellation coverage. Additionally, travelers already on their journey who need to reroute due to the airport's shutdown may also be eligible for compensation, though such claims typically require delays of ten or more hours.
Chan emphasized that travel insurance policies have time thresholds for compensation, which vary between insurers. He advised travelers to carefully review their policy details to ensure their rights and benefits are protected.
