After China Central Television (CCTV) revealed the poor production environment of substandard sanitary pads, some mainland travelers expressed concerns about purchasing low-quality pads in the Mainland and decided to buy some in Hong Kong. A pharmacy representative predicts that the number of mainland visitors coming to Hong Kong to buy sanitary pads may increase in the short term, but it will not affect local supply.

Many mainland travelers prefer to buy daily necessities in Sheung Shui. One traveler bought a large bag of sanitary pads recently, stating that she has always been accustomed to buying them in Hong Kong.

Mainland traveler Angela said, "Sometimes I feel that the products here in Hong Kong are a bit more effective, mainly because I feel that things in Hong Kong are safer, as there are stricter inspections in various aspects. Regulatory authorities should enhance their control over manufacturers and conduct surprise inspections."

The products exposed by CCTV this time include some substandard items from well-known foreign brands. Some mainland travelers said they no longer dare to buy these brands and have more confidence in local brands.

A mainland traveler remarked, "Since it has been reported, I definitely wouldn't buy them. Moreover, now there are some local brands that we produce ourselves, and they are becoming increasingly popular. Everyone is eager to buy them, and there are many on social media, which ensures quality. (Do they meet national standards?) Yes."

Ms. Jiang, another mainland traveler, stated, "If they are unhygienic, it significantly affects women, so we need to boycott substandard sanitary pads. If I come to Hong Kong, I will definitely think about buying these and bringing some back."

A pharmacy association noted that most paper products sold in Hong Kong come from the Pearl River Delta. They believe that there may be more mainland people coming to Hong Kong to purchase sanitary pads in the short term.

Lam Wai-man, Chairman of the Hong Kong General Chamber of Pharmacy Limited said, "Yes, psychologically, there will be some people doing this initially, but I believe it will only be a small portion of people; not everyone will come to Hong Kong to buy. The situation with mainland visitors coming to Hong Kong has changed compared to before the pandemic, as those coming now are generally younger. Previously, visitors would even buy tissue paper to take back."

Lam emphasized that the supply of these products in Hong Kong is sufficient and that a temporary increase in demand will not have an impact.
