A 27-year-old man was arrested in Tokyo after attempting to use counterfeit Japanese banknotes at a convenience store. The store clerk detected the fake cash and alerted the police, leading to a search of the suspect's home, where more counterfeit bills were discovered.
Japan introduced a new series of banknotes in July last year, including updated 1,000 yen, 5,000 yen, and 10,000 yen with enhanced anti-counterfeiting features.
However, reports of fake notes have recently emerged. According to Japanese media, the suspect attempted to purchase a drink and cigarettes worth 690 yen at a convenience store on Feb. 10 using a counterfeit 10,000 yen note. The clerk noticed discrepancies in the note's texture and missing security features, such as reflective patterns visible under ultraviolet light. After comparing it with other notes in the register, the clerk confirmed it was counterfeit and immediately contacted the police.
A subsequent police search of the man's residence uncovered over 50 counterfeit 10,000 yen and 5,000 yen notes, along with a home printer. Authorities believe the suspect used a color printer and possibly additional techniques to produce the fake bills.
This marks the first reported case of counterfeit notes involving Japan's new banknote series. During questioning, the suspect admitted to the crime.
Since February, reports of counterfeit bills being used at convenience stores, small eateries, and by taxi drivers have surfaced in Tokyo. Police are investigating whether Saito is connected to these incidents.
