Recent rumors have taken the internet by storm, claiming that a "top-tier male celebrity" lost approximately RMB 1.03 billion during a seven-day gambling spree at the VIP lounge of the Wynn Palace casino in Macao. Allegedly, the celebrity also had to mortgage his luxury home and private jet. The speculation quickly became a trending topic, with online sleuths suggesting that the star in question might be Jay Chou. On March 11, the hashtag "Jay Chou Macao" even surged to the top of Weibo's trending list.
In response to the rumors, Jay Chou's close friend, Liu Genghong, dismissed the claims on social media. He humorously shared a video of Chou performing in Xiamen, commenting, "Let's balance out this strange trending topic with something meaningful instead of wasting public resources."
Jay Chou himself seemed unbothered, posting casually to his Instagram account.
Later in the day, Jay Chou's management company, JVR Music, issued an official statement, denying all allegations. The statement clarified that "the rumors about a 'top-tier male celebrity gambling in Macao' have nothing to do with Jay Chou," urging the public to avoid spreading false claims.
Wang Gaofei, CEO of Weibo, also addressed the controversy, revealing that the earliest mention of the rumor dates back to October 2024. According to Wang, AI analysis indicated that the rumor lacked credible evidence, with the primary sources being anonymous accounts and marketing platforms. He also pointed out logical flaws and questionable motives behind the spread of the claims.
