The third session of the 14th National People's Congress held a press conference on March 9 at 3 pm in the Media Center, focusing on livelihood issues.
A reporter from Dubai inquired about the government's work report on urban renewal progress and plans. The Minister of Housing and Urban-Rural Development, Ni Hong stated that since the central government began urban renewal in 2019, nearly 280,000 old urban communities have been renovated, benefiting 120 million residents. This includes over 130,000 new elevators, 3.8 million additional parking spaces, nearly 80,000 elderly care facilities, 1.05 million charging stations, and 31 million square meters of cultural and recreational facilities. Additionally, over 500,000 kilometers of underground pipelines, 40,000 pocket parks, and 120,000 kilometers of urban greenways have been developed.
Ni highlighted two main focuses for ongoing urban renewal: first, conducting assessments to identify issues, with a consensus on assessing first, then renewing. These assessments should address urgent resident concerns and shortcomings affecting urban sustainability. Currently, over 290 cities have begun these assessments, with plans to extend support to county-level cities.
The second focus is project implementation to address identified problems. The government aims to launch livelihood projects targeting renovations of old communities and enhancing facilities for the elderly and children; development projects for updating old industrial areas; and safety projects to create livable, resilient cities by improving infrastructure and safety measures including: renovating old urban residential communities built before 2000, expanding the scope of rural village renovations.
