
Woo Chia-wei, the founding president of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), passed away on Sunday (March 2) at the age of 87.
Woo served as HKUST's president from 1991 to 2001, during which he played a pivotal role in shaping the university's reputation as a leading academic institution. Notably, in the early 1990s, Woo was among the first to propose the groundbreaking concept of a "Hong Kong Bay Area," which later laid the foundation for the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
HKUST has expressed its profound sadness over Woo's passing, commemorating his visionary leadership and significant contributions to both the university and the region.
