China's tech giant Baidu has announced a strategic cooperation agreement with Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), a leading battery manufacturer, as reported by Xinhua on Friday (Feb. 28).
The collaboration will focus on two main areas: digital intelligence and autonomous driving. The goal is to advance AI applications in the industry and promote autonomous mobility services.
Baidu plans to utilize its AI expertise to support CATL in areas such as chips, platforms, and applications. In terms of autonomous driving, the partnership will work on integrating CATL's battery technology, battery-swapping solutions, and skateboard chassis into the development of unmanned vehicles.
Baidu is a frontrunner in autonomous driving and has tested robotaxi services in several major Chinese cities, including Beijing, Wuhan, Chongqing, Shenzhen, and Shanghai. As of January this year, its autonomous ride-hailing service has completed over 9 million rides across the country.
Founded in Ningde, Fujian Province, in 2011, CATL has rapidly become one of the world's top battery manufacturers, known for its high energy density and fast-charging capabilities.
