On Feb. 25, a near-collision occurred at Chicago Midway International Airport when a private plane entered the runway without authorization as a Southwest Airlines flight was landing. Fortunately, the situation was averted, and the commercial flight landed safely.
The incident took place around 9 am local time. The private plane was preparing to depart Nashville, Tennessee, but the pilot miscommunicated with the control tower regarding the runway instructions. As a result, the private aircraft entered the runway where the Southwest Airlines flight was about to land. The Southwest flight had to make an emergency climb to avoid a collision and ultimately landed safely.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating the incident. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized on social media the importance of pilots adhering to control tower instructions, warning that failure to do so could result in license revocation. Southwest Airlines stated that its crew followed safety protocols during the incident, underscoring the priority of passenger and employee safety.
