With the new financial budget set to be announced on Feb. 26, Executive Council member and member of the Legislative Council Lam Kin-fung discussed several pressing topics in a recent television interview.
Lam opposed freezing civil servant salaries, suggesting that if cuts were to occur, they should apply equally to all government officials. He emphasized that reducing salaries could harm morale and proposed using artificial intelligence to improve efficiency within the civil service.
On the "$2 Scheme" fare discount, Lam highlighted the need to consider inflation, stating that the fare might need to be adjusted to "three or four dollars" based on current inflation rates. Regarding the Northern Metropolis development, he expressed concerns about delays due to recent government consultations. Lam urged the government to expedite processes and consider tax incentives to attract investment.
Lastly, he acknowledged that Hong Kong's financial deficit won't be resolved this year, estimating that achieving a balanced budget could take at least two to three years.
