After former Chief Executive Carrie Lam left office at the end of June 2022, due to insufficient space in the offices of the other three former Chief Executives on Kennedy Road, the government arranged for her to have a new office location at Pacific Place in Admiralty, with an area of approximately 3,000 square feet.

The Secretary for Administration, Eric Chan Kwok-ki, responded today (Feb. 12) in the Legislative Council to a written inquiry from legislator Michael Tien, stating that after the lease of Pacific Place ends, the relevant parties do not need to carry out restoration works. However, the government is currently renovating a new office located in Wan Chai, with an estimated budget of approximately HK$2.8 million.

On Jan. 13, the office of the former Chief Executive confirmed that Lam will be relocating to the 23rd floor of the Immigration Tower in Wan Chai, using the former office of the Director of Immigration as her new office.

Lam previously expressed her welcome to this arrangement, which allows her to continue her work as the former Chief Executive while saving on rental expenses. She plans to move into the office at the Immigration Tower after necessary renovations, which are expected to be completed before the lease expires at Pacific Place in May this year. The office of the former Chief Executive stated that they understand the office space at the Immigration Tower can be used for at least three years.

According to records, the Immigration Tower in Wan Chai is 177 meters tall, with a total of 49 floors, completed in 1989. In 2008, the then Financial Secretary John Tsang Chun-wah disclosed in the budget that there were plans to relocate the three government buildings in Wan Chai occupying 1.3 hectares of land, freeing up space to construct Grade A office buildings and exhibition facilities. The relocation project began in the second quarter of 2015, and the Immigration Department has moved to its new headquarters building in Southern Tseung Kwan O last year.
