Lingnan University announced that it has provided all students and faculty members with free DeepSeek-R1 models since yesterday (Feb. 20). Staff and students can conveniently select GPT-3.5, GPT-4o, GPT-4Turbo, or DeepSeek R1 on the University's ChatGPT portal. These models will help enhance teaching and learning, conduct research, and increase work efficiency.

Prof S. Joe Qin, Wai Kee Kau Chair Professor of Data Science and President of Lingnan University in Hong Kong, said in recent years, the academic and technological communities have made great progress in large language model (LLM) research, and one of the important achievements is the Generative Pre-training Transformer (GPT). One of the key achievements is the GPT. Recently, DeepSeek, a Mainland startup, has further improved the efficiency of AI by skillfully integrating various technologies. Its low-cost and open-source model is particularly eye-catching, breaking the Western monopoly of AI in the past.
He said that mankind has officially entered the post-AI era and must learn to co-exist and collaborate with AI, describing AI as being as easy to use as an Excel spreadsheet. In addition, AI technologies, including chatbots and content-generation tools, are being used more frequently to enhance the learning experience, save time in content creation, and stimulate creativity. AI still has its limitations in terms of creativity, but it can be seen as a complementary tool.
"If students are not allowed to use AI, they will not be able to learn how to use it correctly and effectively, and it is the role of the teacher to help students to develop the right values, so that they can distinguish between right and wrong," Qin said.
