In today's (Feb. 21) match of the 34th ITTF-ATTU Asian Cup 2025, Hong Kong player Wong Chun-ting faced off against Japanese rising star Shinozuka Hiroto, ultimately losing 1-3. The outcome leaves Wong's chances of advancing uncertain. The two players had met twice before, each securing one victory, making this match highly anticipated.
Shinozuka started strong in the first game, quickly taking a 3-0 lead. Wong struggled to find his rhythm, committing numerous errors, and Shinozuka claimed the game 11-5. In the second game, Wong initially gained a 2-0 lead but lost momentum after several mistakes. Despite narrowing the gap to 7-5, he ultimately fell 11-7, giving Shinozuka a two-game advantage.
Wong mounted a comeback in the third game, starting aggressively and taking the first two points. After trailing 6-7, he scored five consecutive points to win the game 11-7. However, the fourth and final game saw Wong fall behind 4-9. He fought back to tie at 9-9, only to narrowly lose 11-9, sealing a 3-1 victory for Shinozuka.
In his previous group-stage matches, Wong lost to the national team's Lin Shidong in the first game but defeated Saudi player Ali Alkhadrawi in the second. Shinozuka, known as a standout among Japan's new generation, is particularly skilled in doubles and excels at handling short balls.
In a post-match interview, Wong admitted that all four games were challenging due to errors in offense, defense, and overall strategy, leaving him on the back foot throughout the match. "I made many adjustments, but sometimes I couldn't control myself. I missed key opportunities in critical moments," he said.
