For the third consecutive year, the Airport Authority Hong Kong has established a Cherry Blossom Garden along Chek Lap Kok South Road at the airport, which is open to the public free of charge starting today (Feb. 19). This year's garden has been expanded, featuring more lounge chairs and artificial turf for visitors and tourists to enjoy the cherry blossoms.
Steven Yiu Siu-chung, Executive Director of Airport Operations at the Airport Authority, announced that this year's expansion "Cherry Blossom Bay" is located near the seafront. The cherry blossom garden features over 30 "good luck" cherry blossoms, which are heat-resistant and well-suited to the climate of South China.
Yiu stated that in response to public feedback last year regarding the cherry blossoms' blooming period being too short at around 10 days, the Airport Authority has planted cherry blossoms at different times this year. This aims to create two distinct blooming periods, allowing the entire cherry blossom viewing experience to last up to one month.
Yiu stated that the garden is open daily until 8:00 p.m., featuring various colored spotlights in the evening to allow the public to enjoy the nighttime cherry blossoms. He mentioned that last year's blooming period of approximately two weeks attracted a total of 120,000 visitors to the garden, and this year's turnout is expected to be even higher. The Airport Authority has already coordinated with the police to implement crowd control measures if the number of visitors becomes excessive, ensuring safety for all.
