According to the latest labor force statistics released today (Feb. 18) by the Census and Statistics Department, the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate stood at 3.1% from November 2024 to January 2025, unchanged from October to December 2024. The underemployment rate also remained stable at 1.1% in both periods.

Total employment decreased by approximately 2,300, from 3,718,900 in October to December 2024 to 3,716,600 from November 2024 to January 2025. During the same period, the labor force declined by around 5,700, from 3,832,400 to 3,826,700. The number of unemployed persons fell by about 3,500, from 113,600 to 110,100. The number of underemployed persons during this period was 43,000, similar to the 43,500 recorded in the previous period.

The Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Chris Sun, commented that the unemployment rate has remained low and stable. He noted that while various sectors experienced different movements in unemployment rates, the overall changes were not significant. Looking ahead, Sun expressed that the labor market is expected to remain stable in the near term, although global economic uncertainties may pose challenges for some businesses.

The statistics were compiled from the General Household Survey, which followed definitions recommended by the International Labour Organization. The survey included about 26,000 households, representing around 68,000 individuals, providing an accurate picture of the labor market in Hong Kong for the specified period.
