The Hong Kong Observatory predicts that humidity will exceed 50% in the next 9 days, reaching 90%. Many people use air conditioning to dehumidify their homes; however, the Observatory warns that this method is ineffective. Once the air conditioner is turned off and the windows are opened, water vapor can easily condense on cooler surfaces, exacerbating humidity levels.

Here are 7 ways DotDotNews has compiled to prevent moisture at home.

**Tip 1: Use alcohol to wipe ceilings**

First, dust the area with a dry towel, then dip the towel in 70-75% alcohol and wipe it down. This effectively removes mold.

**Tip 2: Clean with diluted baking soda**

Use a dry cloth or an old toothbrush dipped in bleach to remove mold, then follow up with a damp cloth.

If it doesn't work well, cover the area with bleach-soaked cotton overnight, then wipe it with a damp cloth. Alternatively, you can use an old toothbrush dipped in baking soda and water mixture to clean, then dry with alcohol wipes.

**Tip 3: Place the dehumidifier in the center of the room**

Position the dehumidifier in the center of the room and ensure that all windows and doors are closed while in use, particularly those facing south and southeast, to prevent moisture from entering.

Avoid staying in the same space for extended periods to prevent skin issues. Additionally, regularly clean the water tank and replace the filter if your unit has one.

**Tip 4: Close the windows facing south and southeast**

Avoid opening the windows in the morning and evening when humidity levels are high. Instead, open them during the middle of the day when it's drier. After using the toilet or cooking, close the door and keep the ventilation fan running for 24 hours.

**Tip 5: Place moisture-proof beads and moisture-absorbing packets in cabinets**

Moisture-absorbent packs are effective at absorbing moisture and are suitable for wardrobes and shoe cabinets, while moisture-proof beads are ideal for small, sealed spaces, such as drawers and storage boxes. However, tests by the Consumer Council found that the effectiveness of some of these products varies greatly, with some being nearly ineffective.

**Tip 6: Use warm salt water for mopping**

Salt can accelerate the evaporation of water vapor, and warm water at 30-40 degrees Celsius can kill germs. On wet days, mopping with warm salt water helps the floor dry quickly. If necessary, add white vinegar to enhance the disinfecting effect. However, caution is needed with wooden floors, as moisture can cause them to warp.

**Tip 7: Light incense**

Lighting incense indoors helps eliminate musty odors and prevents water vapor condensation, thereby reducing humidity. Always prioritize safety first!
