An explosion occurred at Shin Kong Mitsukoshi's Taichung Zhonggang store in Taichung, Taiwan, this morning (Feb. 13), with reports of injuries. As of 12:25 p.m., at least one person was killed and many others were hospitalized as a result of the accident.
According to reports from Taiwan media, the shopping mall involved in the incident also had a gas explosion accident when it opened 25 years ago, resulting in three employees being hospitalized with burns.
The mall opened in October 2000 and was still in its trial operation phase when, on the evening after its opening, a gas explosion occurred in a wonton shop on the 11th-floor food court. Three female employees were working near a gas stove when the explosion happened, resulting in injuries from the flames. They were urgently transported to the hospital for treatment; one of the women suffered second-degree burns on her face and required skin graft surgery, while the other two sustained lighter injuries and were not in life-threatening condition.
Local police later investigated the incident and confirmed that the explosion was caused by high temperatures igniting an insecticide located near the gas stove, which led to the blast. This incident has raised concerns about safety protocols and regulations in commercial establishments.
