The Hong Kong Tramways Company has submitted a fare increase application to the Transport Department, proposing to raise adult ticket prices from the current HK$3 to HK$3.3. Children's fares would increase from HK$1.5 to HK$1.6, while senior citizen fares would rise from HK$1.3 to HK$1.5. Monthly pass prices are set to remain unchanged.
The chairman of the Hong Kong Tramways Workers Union expressed support for the fare increase during a radio program on Feb. 13. However, a member of the Legislative Council, Chan Hok-fung present on the same program voiced concerns that the fare hike could lead to a loss of passengers.
It is noted that since the last fare increase in 2022, the Tramways Company has been able to offer salary increases and new allowances to employees, and measures such as contribution bonuses were introduced, helping to retain many young employees and slightly increase staff levels, while also lowering the average age of employees. He emphasized the importance of maintaining local manufacturing for tram frames and prefabricated components, stating that inadequate compensation makes it difficult to train new talent.
Following the opening of the Extension of Island Line to the Western District (including Sai Ying Pun Station, HKU Station, and Kennedy Town Station), tram passenger numbers began to decline. The introduction of the "$2 Scheme" further exacerbated this challenge, leading to a significant drop in ridership.
Legislative Council member Chan Hok-fung expressed concern that the fare increase would narrow the gap between tram and bus fares, potentially causing the tram service to lose its regular passenger base and create a detrimental cycle. He suggested that many tourists currently visit the Kennedy Town tram station for the unique experience, and urged the tram company to enhance its appeal by offering more souvenirs to attract visitors.
