"Teen Accounts" are designed specifically for users aged 13 to 17. (Internet)

Meta, the parent company of Facebook, announced yesterday (Feb. 11) that it will launch Instagram teen accounts in the Asia-Pacific region, including Hong Kong, starting this week. The initiative aims to enhance safety and privacy for teenage users.

According to Instagram's official website, "Teen Accounts" are designed specifically for users aged 13 to 17. These accounts automatically adopt higher-strength safety and privacy settings to protect teens online. The feature also includes parental supervision tools that allow parents or guardians to establish supervisory relationships with their teens' accounts.

Through these tools, parents can set time limits for their teens on Instagram and Threads, approve or deny requests to lower safety settings, review who their teens have chatted with, and approve or deny their teens' requests to switch to public accounts.

Teen accounts will also notify users to close Instagram or Threads once their daily usage reaches 60 minutes. Additionally, teen accounts will automatically enter sleep mode from 10:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. daily, during which all Instagram notifications will be silenced.
