In response to US President Donald Trump's repeated attempts to buy Greenland, Danish citizens have launched a satirical petition proposing to buy California instead. According to a report from EFE on Feb. 10, the online petition, titled "Let's Buy California from Trump – Denmark's Next Big Adventure," has already garnered nearly 200,000 signatures. The initiative humorously criticizes Trump's Greenland acquisition plans, which have caused significant dissatisfaction among Danes.

The petition, hosted on a website called "Denmarkification," outlines the purported benefits of purchasing California. It highlights the state's abundant avocado supply, technological advantages, and the opportunity to rename Disneyland to "Hans Christian Andersenland" in honor of the famous Danish author. The site also suggests giving Mickey Mouse a Viking helmet for the rebranding.
To fund the purchase, the petition proposes raising US$1 trillion through crowdfunding. The website humorously envisions bringing "Hygge" (a Danish word for coziness and contentment) to Hollywood, adding bike lanes to Beverly Hills, and offering organic smørrebrød (sandwiches) to every street corner. The petition even adopts a playful twist on Trump's slogan, declaring, "Let's Make California Danish!"
The website also mocks Trump's strained relationship with California, said Trump "isn't exactly California's biggest fan." "He's called it 'the most ruined state in the Union' and has feuded with its leaders for years. We're pretty sure he'd be willing to part with it for the right price. And hey, we'll even throw in a lifetime supply of Danish pastries to sweeten the deal," the petition reads.
Greenland, the world's largest island with an area of around 2.16 million square kilometers, is an autonomous territory of Denmark. It is rich in natural resources and holds significant geopolitical importance. Earlier this year, Trump stated that acquiring Greenland was essential for the US's "economic security" and did not rule out using "military or economic pressure" to gain control of the island. Both Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenland's Prime Minister Múte B. Egede have firmly rejected the idea, reiterating that Greenland is not for sale. Egede has repeatedly emphasized that Greenland's residents "do not wish to become Americans."
