An engineering train of the MTR broke down in the early hours of Wednesday (Feb. 5), causing a delay of nearly seven hours in the service of the East Rail Line. The Deputy Secretary for Transport and Logistics Bureau confirmed this morning (Feb. 7) that the incident had triggered the "Service Performance Rebate" mechanism, and that the MTR was required to pay a fine for fare concessions, which amounted to at least HK$1 million.
The spokesperson said that the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department's preliminary investigation shows that the incident does not involve the derailment of engineering vehicles.
