In a groundbreaking announcement made early this morning (Feb. 6) at 3 a.m., OpenAI revealed that its ChatGPT search functionality is now open to all users, free of charge and without requiring registration.

Unlike Google's traditional indexed search engine, ChatGPT's search leverages real-time web crawling, enabling it to process and provide fresh information within minutes. This capability makes it particularly advantageous for industries such as stock markets, sports, and finance, where rapid access to the latest news is critical. Additionally, powered by advanced AI models, ChatGPT can interpret users' search intentions more effectively and even provide source links for its results.

This development has sparked widespread reactions online. Many users claim this could mark the end of Google's dominance in the search engine market, predicting a significant decline in Google's search traffic.

Reports suggest that when users ask questions in Chinese, ChatGPT primarily retrieves information from Chinese websites. Conversely, the same queries in English yield results primarily sourced from international websites. Overall, the ChatGPT search feature has been praised for its robust performance.

In addition, OpenAI announced the full rollout of its deep research feature to professional users across the UK, EU, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, and Switzerland.

Simultaneously, OpenAI is ramping up its investment in humanoid robotics. On Jan. 31, the company filed a trademark application with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for humanoid robots. The application references user-programmable humanoid robots and humanoid robots with communication and learning capabilities for assisting and entertaining humans.

While filing intellectual property does not guarantee product development, industry observers are taking note. Within the past week, news has surfaced that OpenAI has terminated its partnership with Figure AI, heightening speculation about the company's future plans in robotics.

This move aligns with OpenAI's efforts to rebuild its robotics team, which was disbanded in 2020. In November 2024, OpenAI recruited Caitlin Kalinowski, Meta's former head of hardware, to lead its robotics and consumer hardware projects. Kalinowski, who previously spearheaded the development of Meta's prototype AR glasses Orion, stated his focus is on integrating AI into the physical world through robotics and hardware collaboration.

According to reports from The Information, OpenAI has already begun testing humanoid robots equipped with custom sensors and AI capabilities, designed to perform tasks in real-world environments with human-like intelligence.

Over the past few years, OpenAI has significantly increased its investments in humanoid robotics. In addition to its previous collaboration with Figure AI, OpenAI is a major investor in the Norwegian robotics startup 1X Technologies, which specializes in developing robots for home environments.

Interestingly, OpenAI's growing interest in humanoid robots could position it in direct competition with its former collaborators, such as Figure AI and 1X Technologies. This dual approach of collaboration and competition exemplifies OpenAI's unique business strategy.
