A tragic incident occurred on Feb. 3, when a 5-month-old baby girl was found unconscious while crossing the Lo Wu Checkpoint in Hong Kong. Despite emergency medical efforts, the infant was pronounced dead shortly after being rushed to North District Hospital. The cause of death remains under investigation.
Details of the Incident
The baby girl, surnamed Sin, was traveling with her parents, a 30-year-old father and a 26-year-old mother surnamed Wang, who had taken her to Guangzhou to visit relatives in early January. During the return journey on February 3, the family fed the baby in Shenzhen, and she appeared normal at the time.
The baby then fell asleep while being carried in a baby sling by her mother. Upon reaching the Lo Wu immigration hall at around 7 p.m., the parents attempted to take the baby out of the sling for border checks, only to discover she was unresponsive and had a weak pulse.
The parents immediately sought help from immigration officers, who performed first aid on the infant while awaiting the arrival of an ambulance. The baby was transferred to North District Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 8:55 p.m.
Investigation and Findings
Initial police investigations revealed no external injuries on the baby's body, although traces of suspected vomit were found around her mouth. A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the exact cause of death.
The case is currently classified as a "death upon arrival at the hospital" and has been handed over to the Border District Crime Unit for further investigation.
The couple's first child, the baby girl, had been in good health following a routine medical check-up in late December before the trip to Guangzhou. The family had traveled back to Hong Kong via Shenzhen without any prior signs of distress.
