Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sharply criticized the U.S. government's decision to impose 25% tariffs on Canadian and Mexican imports, calling it "an attack on the entire nation of Canada" and a betrayal by the United States, Canada's "closest ally and neighbor." Speaking at a press conference, Trudeau revealed that he has repeatedly attempted to speak directly with U.S. President Trump since his inauguration, but all efforts have been unsuccessful.

Trudeau warned Americans that the tariffs on Canadian goods would significantly affect the U.S. economy. "Tariffs on Canada will put your jobs at risk, potentially shutting down U.S. auto plants and other manufacturing facilities. They will increase the cost of living, including food at grocery stores and gas at the pump," he stated.

Canada's Retaliatory Measures

In response to the U.S. tariffs, Trudeau announced that Canada would impose retaliatory tariffs on $155 billion CAD worth of American goods. A 25% tariff on $30 billion CAD of U.S. imports will take effect on February 4, with an additional $125 billion CAD of goods subjected to tariffs within 21 days.

Beyond tariffs, Canada plans to implement further measures to pressure the U.S. to reverse its actions. These measures may include restricting exports of critical minerals and energy resources to the U.S. and barring American companies from bidding on Canadian government contracts. Trudeau dismissed Trump's threats of escalating tariffs in response to Canada's retaliation, hoping Canada would not yield to U.S. pressure.

A Call for Unity in Canada

Trudeau also urged Canadians to stand together in the face of the U.S. tariffs and to support domestic industries. He encouraged consumers to check product labels and prioritize Canadian-made goods whenever possible. "Find your own way to stand up for Canada. At this moment, we must unite because we love this country," Trudeau said.

Mexico Joins in Retaliation

The U.S. government's tariffs, announced on February 1, also targeted Mexican imports, prompting Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum to announce her country's countermeasures. She instructed Mexican Economy Minister Marcelo Ebrard to activate Mexico's "Plan B," which involves imposing tariffs on U.S. goods exported to Mexico.

The escalating trade tensions between the U.S., Canada, and Mexico signal a deepening rift among North America's key trading partners, potentially disrupting supply chains and increasing economic uncertainty across the region.
